And We're Off
Sources at the "rumor mill" at One Police Plaza have
whispered to QConfidential that Police Commish Bernard Kerik is planning to
pack it
in come March 2001.
The news is coming from insiders who, we are told, are
"solid" and "in the know." Theyre saying that Kerik and Mayor Rudolph
Guiliani knew that the new commish would be moving on in early 2001 when he was
appointed.
But Rudy decided that Kerik was the right man for the job
despite the limited tenure.
The rumor mill continues to spin that
First Deputy Commish Queens Joseph Dunne will be named NYPD Commish when
Kerik leaves.
Sound familiar?
Stay tuned. And remember, you read it
here first.
Ol' Boies
Network
In Florida, the presidency is on the line, but high stakes litigation
is nothing new to lead Gore hack David Boies. The 59-year old Boies
represented the government against Microsoft and also defended Napstar in high profile
cases earlier in the year.
If "perception" is 9/10 of the law, then Boiles strategic
anti-Johnny Cochrane, quasi-Green Acres-red-neck-country-lawyer image is the
gimmick that could make the difference in who will be the next President.
A Gore beat reporter tell us that "Boies has cleverly separated
himself from slick Washington big shots to run things his way." Boies style is
wearing rumpled suits purchased at Sears that reflect his Midwestern roots, rather than
the designer threads that his Yale Law School education, his ever growing New York-based
law firm, and $700 per hour fees and $2 million plus per year salary could afford him.
A Court TV reporter tells us that " Boies is the man down here. People are crazy
about him. He can read everybody that he encounters, and those instincts and his courtroom
brilliance is the x-factor that could tilt the election."

Gore-going On
Doughnuts
Many argued that Al Gore made a fatal tactical error by
distancing himself from Bill Clinton during his race for the White House.
Ironically, while Gore has been under electoral siege of his and George W. Bushs
own making, the Vice President has taken the road frequently traveled by the President:
The road to the nearest Krispy Kreme. Trips to Krispy Kremes had often fueled
Clinton during his two triumphant runs for the Presidency. (So memorably chronicled in
"Primary Colors").
QConfidential has learned that while in Nashville awaiting the Election
Night returns, Gore was observed sneaking out to a nearby Krispy Kreme where he was to
"eat glazed doughnuts like they were going out of style". Ever since that
infamous night, Gore has been "battling the bulge while battling the ballots", a
Gore campaigner said. Back in Washington now, sources say that Gore has been "tightly
wound, irritable, and eating everything in sight. You saw the Saturday photo op of the
familys outing to the ice cream parlor. Well, obviously there was propaganda at work
there, but another side of it is that hes eating everything to keep himself on the
go. The Krispy Kremes give him a jolt. "
Win or lose, Gore could be in for some serious dough as a future ad man for the popular
doughnut chain.
Mob Rules?
Many Democrats are charging that a "mob" of GOPers
intimidated election officials in Miami-Dade County instilling enough fear to make
them call off last weeks recount of ballots.
"The whiff of fascism is in the air," said Manhattan
Congressman Jerry Nadler in the wake of one Republican demonstration inside a
Miami-Dade canvassing center.
Several GOP officials have rejected the notion that they intimidated
anyone, citing that protestors were only exercising their First Amendment rights.
But one Queensite who came into contact with a group of ranting
Republicans sees it another way.
Coronas own Luis Rosero, a deputy spokesman for the
Democratic National Committee was quoted as saying, "I was pushed and shoved and
elbowed."
"I took the No. 7 train going to school, so I clearly know the
difference between being attacked and accidental conduct," Rosero said.
There's gold in them there buttons! A button (right) distributed by 2001 Council
candidate David Weprin, picturing himself along with Al Gore and Joe Lieberman, recently
sold on the internet auction site ebay for $8.58 plus shipping. We understand Weprin still
has some of these buttons available and apparently there is a market for them on ebay.
