The Body Inside The Spidey Suit

Look out Spidey, we sense that the body in that tight-fighting, web-slinging, mega-bucks Spider-man movie began it’s days in Queens!

Jason Crew is a Bayside boy . . . though we forgive him for recently moving to Long Island . . . and he body doubles for Tobey Maguire in what is expected to be the blockbuster of the year, opening May 3, 2002. But Jason’s touch with fame doesn’t have him swinging from the stars yet. The young actor and model was modest about his looks and the hard work. He explained – without stardom in his beautiful, brown eyes – that he puts on the $40,000 Spider-man costume and stands in for Maguire.

The down-to-earth Jason said he doesn’t have the "high fashion" look, but "the trend now is not glamorous looking . . . it’s the editorial look," and we wondered what Daily Bugle newsroom could be filled with the likes of this photogenic body. But he added that the key to it all is self-motivation and confidence. "You need to market yourself, to build a network.

For Jason, a grad of P.S. 209, J.H.S. 194 and Holy Cross High, it started with a love of being in the spotlight.

For five years he has educated himself about the business, picked where to train, made sure to be seen in the right places and do the right kind of acting and modeling jobs. This spring, he will be shooting a pilot in Trinidad as the co-lead for a program called "Bikini Beach." He described it as "a Baywatch meets news broadcasting series."

You can always check him out bartending at Sgt. Pepper’s in Glen Cove or, when he comes back to his Bayside roots, enjoying the scene at the Crazy Moose Saloon or the Victorian Lounge. The body, QConf discovered, was built up with the help of Powerhouse Gym on Francis Lewis and GFC in the Whitepoint Shopping Center.

And just a note to the ladies: he is single and searching for the "ideal woman" who is attractive, "personality is huge," has a sense of humor, confident about themselves, "has good morals, a good head on their shoulders, takes care of themselves, and a non-smoker."

Big Mac Terror TV

Queens’ own "Big Mac," has gone from the tennis court to holding court on one of the most stress-filled shows to hit the small screen in a while.

conf3-0125.gif (17344 bytes)

Douglaston native and tennis ace, John McEnroe, is the host of ABC’s "The Chair" – a quiz show where contestants must hold on to their heart rates in order to win.

ABC execs described the show as the "ultimate test in self-control."

"They’ll be attached to a heart monitor and questioned — interrogated, if you will — by Mac. The contestant who can answer correctly without his base heart rate exceeding a pre-determined range will win big money and stay in the game. But if he can’t keep his emotions in check and his heart rate in line, his winnings will slowly disappear."

The show debuted on Jan. 15 but critics have said that despite some minor quirks, McEnroe, who is well known for his own high-strung on-court rants, exudes a certain amount of charm.

McEnroe told reporters, "I like the challenge of doing something different."

Network executives are hoping the show generates as much interest as the debut of "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?"

Even with only one episode aired it already has its own TV genre of "torture TV," according to published reports.

Trib Caught Up In A Web Auction

According to the online auction site eBay.com, a very "rare" issue of the Queens Tribune went on the block.

Recently, eBay ran an auction for a copy of the Aug. 9, 2001 issue of the Trib that features Queens’ favorite hometown superhero, Spider-Man, on the front with the headline "Queens Caught In The Web."

The online seller who identified him/herself as "dntique" described the issue as an "exclusive that untangles the web of intrigue surrounding a home in Forest Hills and Spider-Man’s real identity."

Funny, that’s how we described it too—right on the front page.

"Dntique" went on to write, "you are bidding on an excellent condition Queens, New York only Spider-Man feature story on the Queens Tribune newspaper. Spider-Man looks great on the cover . . . this cover will look great in a matted frame."

The opening price was $5.

But at least the Trib issue’s asking price was a little higher than dntique’s only other item concurrently on auction – a copy of the magazine Black Diaspora with a photo of Jennifer Lopez on the cover.

Asking price for the mag with cover girl Lopez’s mug on the front was only $2 with no bidders.

Take that J-Lo.

Allan Who?

Councilman Allan Jennings won his District 28 seat against all odds – he raised the smallest amount of money, had the fewest endorsements and took on the organization's guy. And now, after the unlikely victor silenced his critics and beat his opponents to take the Southeast Queens seat, the media doesn’t even know where the poor guy's from.

During a recent appearance on NY1, the bottom of the screen identified Jennings as, "Allan Jennings, Councilman (D) - Brooklyn." When he heard about the error, Jennings laughed, and said, "Well, it’s true, my district has no borders. I represent all the people. They all pay me, so I represent all of them."

He then added, "It could have been worse. I could be Giff Miller." Jennings went on to describe an error in two different Jan. 11 editions of the New York Daily News that identified Council Speaker Miller to illegal activities confusing Miller's photo with one of con artist Robert Gleason.

Council spokesperson Jake Lynn said, "The News photo editor apologized and said it was just a mistake. No harm intended, of course."

Jennings chuckled, and said, "Accidents do happen, but that’s pretty bad. So, you see, me being from Brooklyn isn’t so bad."

Queens At Sundance

conf5-0125.gif (26455 bytes)

Former Tribune Model of the Week Susan Stewart is making her first trip to the Sundance Film Festival in Utah for a movie she starred in. Stewart is a lead in the comedy short film, "Rosa X-Rays Joe." The film is about a day spent at a dentist’s office shot MTV-style with strange sounds that are "aesthetically convoluted." Stewart plays Rosa the receptionist. "I’m going to bring my snowboard," said Stewart.

Star Blunder

Acclaimed singing star, Gloria Gaynor – best known for her Grammy award hit, "I Will Survive" – could use some tips from TV’s popular show "Survivor," where players sink or swim.

The recording star was invited to sing the national anthem at the Jan. 5 Knicks game, but flubbed her way through the song because she didn’t know the words.

Meanwhile, star player for the Celtics, Kenny Anderson from Queens just looked on with a wave of embarrassment.

FUBU Movie

The Queens men that design the FUBU fashion line are reportedly making a movie, which will star rapper DMX. ‘X’ — as he likes to be called — has had two previous leading man roles, the latest was alongside Steven Segal but was a box office bummer. The new movie’s working title is "The Crow."

Confidentially New York . . .
