Of Queens
Bouncing Around
Lisa
Wilson
Home: Flushing
Hair: Brown
Eyes: Hazel
Height: 5’8”
Weight: 120 lbs.
Stats: 34-24-35
Lisa Wilson is glad to
finally be settling down.
Growing up, the
23-year-old’s father was in the Navy, so she has lived in California,
Michigan and Virginia and overseas in the Philippines.
“There are more
opportunities here than anywhere else I’ve lived,” said Wilson about
Queens. “People in the Philippines were friendlier to me than people I
meet in Flushing.”
She has modeled for runway
shows and photo shoots for private artists, she told us.
A recent graduate of
Devry Institute of Technology in Long Island City, Wilson said she is
looking for work as a network administrator.
When she’s not sitting in
front of a computer screen, Wilson told us her passion is music.
She enjoys singing, playing
clarinet and piano.
“If I meet the right
people, I’ll definitely pursue a career in music,” she said.
In her spare time, you can
catch her taking in a movie at the Midway Theater in Forest Hills or
Flushing's New Main Street Cinema —
her favorite spare time activity.
Depressed
On Death Row
John Taylor, convicted
mastermind of the May 24th,
2000 massacre at a Wendy’s Restaurant in Flushing, is depressed over his
death sentence rendered by a Queens jury on Dec. 3.
Jail sources tell QConf that Taylor is on a 24-hour
suicide watch at the Rikers Island infirmary. He faces a sentence of death
by lethal injection on Jan. 8 in Queens Supreme Court after a trial presided
over by Supreme Court Justice Steven Fisher.
He was convicted for his
role in murdering execution-style five Wendy’s employees and attempting to
murder two other employees. Patrick
Castro and JaQuione Johnson survived the bloodbath and returned to testify
against Taylor at his capital murder trial.
Calling
All Models
The
‘Models of Queens’ recently received a call from an unidentified male
who wanted to get in touch with “Dorothy, the model in the paper,” who
was profiled in May of 2001.
When the
reporter who answered the phone said he could not release the information,
the caller questioned why. “If
you’re calling from a modeling agency, offered the reporter, “I can mark
down your contact info and forward it to Dorothy.”
The caller
said that he wanted to photograph her, and then go out with her, and should
be given her number. The caller then said he was, in fact, a Federal Bureau
of Investigations officer, and should be given the number, soon after which
he started laughing and hung up.
Later on
that afternoon, a conference call came in to the “Models of Queens” desk
from two men rwho said they were calling from the State Supreme Court and
wanted to hire “Dorothy” for the birthday of an associate.
Soon after,
the men broke into laughter and hung up.

Councilman:
A Real Comedian
Never say elected officials
don’t know how to throw a party.
During a recent meeting at
his district office to discuss Briarwood’s sinking homes, Councilman Jim
Gennaro pulled out all the stops to make sure the unfortunate residents and
their lawyers got all of the information they needed – and had a decent time.
He gave out popcorn and
mints, shook everyone’s hand, and told a variety of cute and corny jokes
to relax everyone.
When discussing his
background as a geologist, he mentioned his expertise was in “soft rocks,
not hard rocks,” and then subtly mentioned, “It has nothing to do with
music.”
When discussing the
victims’ lawyers, he said, “It seems you are well-represented here.”
Then he added, “And well-represented in government, if I do say so
myself.”
When discussing his limits
in seeking City money to help the residents, he said, “I can’t bop the
Comptroller on the nose and say, ‘Give us the money, do right by these
people.’ I checked long and hard into my job description when I ran and it
says nothing about bopping people on the nose.” And when he had a legal
question, he threw on his heaviest Italian New York accent and said, “I
gotta check wit’ my lawyers here, ya know.”
One resident who attended
the meeting could be heard saying on her way out, “This guy’s a
character. I like him.” Another could be heard saying, “What a funny
man.” Yet another left saying, “He’s down to earth. He’ll help
out.”
A little charm never hurts
anyone – or their chances of re-election.
Toys
For Africa
John F. Kennedy International
Airport welcomed hundreds of children from around the City, as well as the
next Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist of Tennessee and Bono
of the rock band U2, to help load 80,000 shoebox gifts onto a plane headed
for Africa.
The toy drive, called “Operation Christmas Child,” was sponsored
by Samaritan’s Purse, an international relief organization.
The gifts, which were donated by individual families, churches, scout
troups and other civic organizations nationwide, left JFK en route to Uganda
and Sudan for children who suffer from HIV and AIDS. In total, the operation plans to send six million gifts to
Africa this year. “Christmas is about giving and that’s what we’re
witnessing today,” said Senator Frist.
“Operation Christmas Child...shows millions of children that the
world cares about them, their lives and their happiness.”
