A Great Human Being Deserves Justice

If I can have any influence on things, then the murder of Jam Master Jay will not go unsolved or unpunished.

If I can reach someone who might be able help investigators, I want that or those people to come forward.
I have many stories in my mind about Jason Mizell.

These are tales that will follow me to my grave.

I am sure all of his family and friends have similar memories — each person with their own view of a man we were blessed to know.

During his funeral last week, many people told those stories to each other as a form of comfort.  We laughed and we cried as we shared those yarns.

At the time of this writing, there has been no arrest in Jason’s murder.

Jason wasn’t alone when he was shot.

The shooter did not commit this crime by himself.

We all know there are no secrets among dishonest people.

If someone knows something, I urge that person to come forward.

I was a junior in college all the way out in Oklahoma with fellow Hollis resident and 192 alum Dalton Townsend.

We decided to drive down to Dallas, Texas to see Run-DMC perform at a Six Flags concert.

We arrived after a two-hour drive and walked into the park.

For those who have been to a Six Flags concert, you know there are no chairs.

It is standing room only.

Dalton and I were about halfway through the courtyard from the stage.

It was packed.

The concert was scheduled to start in an hour-and-a-half.

As the crowd grew larger, the squeeze was tighter.

It began to seem like the concert wouldn’t be worth it.

I looked up at one of the light scaffolds and saw two people sitting on it.

By some miracle, I could make out that one of the men was Jason.

At the time he was dressed down and he had a bucket hat pulled tightly down to his eyebrows.

I called out his name – his real name – and of course he turned around.

I still don’t know how he could make out our waves from everyone else’s.

He showed us those big teeth and yelled "Yo, what’s up?"

He waved us over to a fence and pointed to it as he started to climb down off the scaffold.

We pushed and shoved our way to the spot where he was waiting.

He reached over the fence and gave us high fives and a hug.

Then he waved over a security guard to let us through the barricades.

If he had only responded to our calls, that alone would have been satisfactory.

But that wasn’t Jason.

He told us to wait at a certain spot.

Soon after, he came back with two backstage passes and the number to his hotel with instructions to call him after the show.

We had the greatest time there.

He didn’t have to extend himself to us that night, but he did.

That was the kind of humanity that was snuffed out.

The person who did it is still out there.

As of this writing there is a $60,000 dollar reward for information leading to the arrest of the person or persons involved in the murder of Jam Master Jay.

For those who may know something about what happened, come forward.

To the person who did this, avoid the risk of what could happen to you during your life on the run.

To the police, don’t marginalize this case as some hip-hop gang war casualty and throw the folder on a pile of other unsolved cases.

Jason was more than a great performer, he was a great human being.

Let’s get to know who his killer is so we can all find closure.
