Dining On Impulse

Impulse Café

298-6200

Cuisine: Jamaican/Chinese

Hours: Mondays- Thursdays 8a.m-7p.m; Fridays and Satur-days 8a.m.-10 p.m.

Impulse Café is an eclectic blend of a sports bar/restaurant/take out deli.

Pearl white marble floor, and New York Knicks memorabilia that decorate the walls, welcome the customers to a fairly spacious environment.

The large screen TVs and the awesome sound system in addition to the courteous wait staff serve to relax the patrons.

The menu at Impulse includes typical Jamaican food such as spicy jerk chicken, curry goat and steamed fish.

However, they serve stewed peas, a dish that is not commonly served on the Jamaican restaurant scene.

I started out dinner with this dish.

The meal consisted of red kidney beans, coconut milk, spinners (little dumplings) and small chunks of beef, seasons and spices, all cooked to a creamy consistency and served with white rice. With each bite, the meal simply melted into my mouth and disappeared from my plate.

My dinner cost $6 and this is the typical price for meals at Impulse.

The prices are very moderate and range from $6- $15 for large fish dishes. There is a lunchtime special of $5 between 12 p.m and 3:30 p.m.

The trademark of the café is its list of natural tropical juices.

The juices are made right in front of the customers’ eyes.

Some of the more popular juices include fruit punch, mango, june plum and the deliciously popular, yet mysterious Marva’s Special.

The restaurant serves up authentic Jamaican breakfasts such as porridge, liver, kidney and ackee and saltfish.

Pepper shrimp, butter shrimp, lo mein and chop suey are all included in the Chinese menu and can be combined with rice and peas for a blend of East meets Caribbean.
