Thanksgiving Day is usually a day to share with the extended family but
this year my family decided to do something different. Instead of driving all the way to
Cleveland, Ohio, we stayed home and went to the Sheraton JFK ten minutes away. This is one
of the most elegant spots in all of Southeast Queens for dining and the food is always
delicious and always in generous portions.
Greeted like royalty, my family and I were immediately escorted to a
prime spot in the elegant dining room of "The Birchwoods" and served with a
basket of hot rolls with butter packets. In short order we were served with a platter of
roasted "tom turkey" with gravy and chestnut stuffing, Idaho mashed potatoes and
mashed sweet potatoes, the latter arranged on the platter like the edge of a beautifully
decorated cake. There was also a delicious fresh vegetable medley of carrot, roasted green
and yellow zucchini and string beans.
The turkey, a tender, juicy, aromatic bird on a platter, was served hot
with warm homemade cranberry sauce that had everyone going back for more and more. It was
just a peaceful, delicious meal served with style and continental manners. Nabil Salama,
the outlets manager was always nearby to greet his guests and ensure their
satisfaction. The expansive dining room plus the elegant grand ballroom makes it a
wonderful place for both large and intimate parties.
Dessert is always my favorite part of dinner and there again, Sheraton
did not disappoint. We were given a tray full of cakes and pies from which to make our
selection. As I played a game of eeney, miney moe, I stopped over a slice of pumpkin pie.
Good choice!
Rich, moist and spiced to perfection, it was the perfect finish to a
great meal. Of course I indulged my urge to sample from each of my family members
plate. The apple pie was delicious as was the carrot cake and chocolates. However, it was
the tiramasu that had everyone waxing poetic. Sweetened just right and served with coffee
or tea, it was perfection itself.
It was a fantastic Thanksgiving meal at a great price and I did not
have to clean up afterwards and had only ten minutes to drive now thats what
I call luxury.
The Sheraton: its not just for sleeping; its for great
dining and catering as well.
