Dining at Sherwoods is always a pleasant experience for me, but a recent rainy
day made the experience even more meaningful. In stark contrast to the damp outside,
Sherwoods Diner offered warmth with its good food, sunny atmosphere and friendly
staff.
With reasonable prices and an extensive menu running the gamut from
hamburger to filet mignon and cold halibut over caesar salad, it was hard to choose, but I
finally ordered the grilled salmon. Entrees are served with starch of choice (rice,
potato/french fries or pasta), a hot green vegetable and soup or salad. I chose mashed
potatoes, string beans and salad. There are also choices for vegetarians as well. Eggplant
Parmigiana and meatless pasta are delicious favorites at Sherwoods.
The drink menu is as extensive as it is varied, ranging from beer to
exotic tropical medleys such as frozen margaritas (made with fresh strawberries and
banana) and the freshly-made pina coladas which are a good antidote for a soggy day.
I was pleased to see the "kiddy menu" I missed on my last
visit. In keeping with the name of the restaurant, the menu offers choices named in honor
of the infamous archer and his colorful cohorts:
Robin Hood: fried filet of sole; Little John: beef burgers; Maid
Marion: Spaghetti with ravioli and salad; Alan-A-Dale: sliced roast turkey with dressing;
King Richard: Pita Pizza with french fries; Sheriff of Nottingham: grilled American Cheese
with French fries. However, the best part of this menu is its wallet-friendliness. The
prices range from $5.50 to $7.50 and include a small soda or milk plus dessert.
My meal arrived after a short wait and was everything I expected.
Garnished with lemon wedges, the salmon was a large center cut grilled to perfection. The
mashed potato and string beans were a delight as well.
The Sherwood experience is never complete without dessert, and mine
came with the meal. Ice cream, Jello, pudding, cakes and cookies are all featured along
with hot beverages such as Irish coffee (Irish Whiskey, fresh whipped cream and coffee)
and Jamaican coffee (Tia Maria, fresh whipped cream and coffee) are always on hand.
Nothing, however, compares to their blueberry pie with fresh whipped cream. It makes you
want to tell your friends.
