Down Home Taste At The Market

Southern Express
Jamaica Farmers Market at
160th Street and Jamaica Avenue, Jamaica

Phone: 558-4401

Hours: Monday-Saturday, 8am-7pm

When I saw Councilman Archie Spigner, looking for a bite to eat at the Market, I knew I was in the right place.

I didn’t have time to wait in line that day, but I made an extra effort to eat at the Jamaica Farmers Market in Jamaica, and it was the right choice.

I normally do not eat heavily at breakfast and skip what’s said to be the most important meal of the day.

But when I saw the prepared fish and grits, pancakes, French toast, and bacon for breakfast, I could not resist the lure of some old fashioned country cooking.

Southern Express serves down home cuisine like no other establishment in the heart of Southeast Queens.

For $4, I was treated to pancakes and fried whiting fish, but you can get whatever you like on the express line.

Eat in the Market’s atrium or take your meal express, but understand that lunch won’t be needed until long after noon.

When looking for lunch or dinner, try the pork chops or fried, baked or bar-bequed chicken and catfish.

The best part of Southern Express is that every item is sold separately — to enable you to mix and match foods like side dishes.

You can get everything your eyes think your stomach can handle, at a price that your wallet can afford.

Forget about area fast food restaurants, and try Southern Express for a cooking break and for a hearty, hot, ready to go meal that can’t be beat this side of the Mason-Dixon line.
