Baked Treats Jamaican Style

The Patty Shop
164-17B Jamaica Ave.,
Jamaica

Hours: 10 a.m. - 7 p.m., open seven days a week

Go, go, go — that seems to be the theme of urban life.

With all the running around contemporary city dwellers do, students and professionals alike have less and less time to nourish their bodies.

However efficient, the fast food mainstays of fried chicken, burgers and fries aren’t necessarily the healthiest choices.

Baked foods are one way to combat the possible health faults and patties, popularized in West Indian cuisine, are a thrifty choice.

Traditionally filled with meat and/or vegetables, the baked treats are staples in most Caribbean eateries.

One Jamaica spot specializes in nothing but the above.

For $5 and under, visitors to the 164 Street and Jamaica Avenue area can enjoy a fast, filling and frugal meal including their pick of callaloo and saltfish; regular, curry and jerk chicken; meatloaf; regular and hot beef patties, the newly introduced BBQ chicken wrap and more.

Warm coco bread, spiced bun and cheese and a variety of fruit juices and soft drinks are available to accompany your choice.

Be advised that The Patty Shop is much more like a stand with patrons of the nearby Central Library, Coliseum Mall and Jamaica High School students vying for line space.

Tip: Try it Jamaican style!

Cola champagne or a grapefruit soda with your patty and coco bread is customary.

Enjoy.
