Harris A Haven For High Achievers

Townsend Harris High School

It’s no wonder that Townsend Harris High School received the most applications for 2007-2008 from eighth grade students as their top choice. The Townsend Harris approach pays off, said Assistant Principal of Pupil and Personnel Services Nancy Solomon. “They appreciate it much more after they’ve gone” off to college. Acceptance statistics are high almost 70-percent.

Most students are required to attend science and humanities Advanced Placement classes or college-level biology, physics, and chemistry at Queens College. The Townsend curriculum introduces the college experience as soon as possible to students.

Most seniors, who are mostly girls, graduate with at least 12 credits to apply to their bachelor’s degrees, and all students are required to complete a community service requirement each year.

Coursework at Townsend Harris is impressive, and all honors-level. Most students complete 12 projects a year, which are a choice of multi-media presentations, sculptures or written reports in addition to their regular class work.

The school year is peppered with frequent quizzes and exams. Also, this is one of the only public schools in the area that students are expected to abide by a strict dress code.

As the public school education in New York continues to be overcrowded and in need of improvement, Townsend Harris strives to defeat the odds by expecting and preparing students to attend collage.
