Safety Defensive Driving Class

The St. Clare’s Church is sponsoring a safety defensive driving class from 8:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. The class is open to people of all ages and is $35.

Family Health Fair

The Queens Comprehensive Perinatal Council, Inc./Infant Mortality Reduction Initiative Project in collaboration with the New York City Housing Authority is planning a Family Health Fair. The event will begin at 11 a.m. and end at 5 p.m. and will take place at the South Jamaica Houses Community Center. 

Free lunch, balloons, tee-shirts, raffle gifts and giveaways will be provided. There will also be a DJ and a clown.

The You Gotta Believe Adoption Agency is looking for families who would be willing to provide love and nurturing to teens and pre-teens. The agency is holding an info-session at 4 p.m. a the Little Flower Children’s Services.

Garden Party and Fashion Show

The Badenya Institute of Dance is hosting a garden party and fashion show at 4 p.m. at the St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Rosedale. The event is $25 per ticket.

Free Tennis Instruction

Youth and Tennis, Inc. teaches tennis free of charge to kids age four to 18 at the Roy Wilkins Park Tennis Center, at 177th Street and Baisley Boulevard.

The classes are held from 8 a.m. to noon, every Saturday. All equipment is provided, but parents must register their children.

Free Summer Program

The National Council of Negro of Greater New York is offering a free summer program for girls ages 12 to 18. The program will offer homework assistance, fun trips, computer literacy and other educational and cultural activities.

Summer Basketball Camp

Applications are now being evaluated for the 10-Star All Star Summer Basketball Camp. The camp is by invitation only for youth ages 10 to 19.

Youth Sports
The LP FAM Youth Organization is registering boys and girls ages five to 16 for the 2004 baseball program. Registration is every Saturday until April 17 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. The registration fee is $90.

Summer Vacation Bible Camp

The Fullness of Joy Ministries Inc. is offering a summer camp from June 28 to August 20. Registration is $50 per child and the cost is $80 per week; $240 per session. Partial scholarships are available.

Theatre Camp

Summer Arts Program

The Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning presents a Summer Arts Program for children age six to 10. The six-week program will include dancing, art, creative writing, drama, music and trips. The program will run from July 12 to August 20.

Help For Displaced Homemakers

The Queens Women’s Network has free workshops and counseling available to help divorced, widowed, separated or single parents.
Services include computer skills training, an open computer lab, job readiness services, personal counseling and information about community resources.

Guitar Lessons

The Afrikan Poetry Theatre, Southeast Queens’ home of verse, is hosting guitar classes several days a week.

Twenty-one-year teacher Guy Daniels conducts private one-on-one sessions from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, for $28 per lesson.

Other events are also held at the Afrikan Poetry Theatre regularly throughout the year.

Ministries Anonymous Support Group

The SQCCE holds positive recovery sessions every Wednesday for individuals recovering from substance abuse and/or living with HIV/AIDS. The sessions are at 1 p.m. at 89-31 161st, Suite 201 in Jamaica. Metro Cards and light refreshments are provided. 

York Observatory Open Nights

What’s that in the sky? Dr. Tim Paglione, astronomer in residence at the York College Observatory, helps aspiring skywatchers find meteors, exploding stars and distant planets using the Observatory’s telescopes.

Every Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. at the College, at 94-20 Guy R. Brewer Blvd. The group will meet in room 2E01 and then go to the terrace.

The Artist in the Studio

Children and their families are invited to see, touch and experience art at the Queens Library Gallery from the June 30 to Aug. 28. Admission is free.
